We Want to Help

Yes, There Are Other Alternatives

We have three major suggestions that alone would make a big impact, but if implemented together, would be a much better solution than this current proposal:

  1. Single Stream Recycling - which allows customers to commingle recyclable paper and mixed containers in one bin. In some communities, this has boosted recycling by 30% and higher. Lack of convenience of recycling is one of the main reasons people say they don't recycle. Single Stream makes the process more convenient resulting in better numbers.
  2. A Token System: It works like this. Local haulers bring a load of recycling to the ACC center, where they would be given a dollar amount per pound or ton of material. At the end of the month, the total amount of recycling the business brought would be deducted from their total landfill bill. This allows the haulers a way to offset overall cost and provides them a financial incentive to encourage their customers to recycle.
  3. Standard Pickup Days: We are very willing to have specific areas of the county designated for certain pickup days to reduce the amount of time trash receptacles are sitting curbside.

We also suggest looking at other areas of the current process: As an example, how can UGA help the county improve our overall recycling? They have the biggest impact of space and people in our county with over 30,000 students and 5,000 employees. Let’s see how we can bring them to the table and help us reach projected goals.

How can the landfill and the recycling center be run more efficiently in order to make the best use of the material that comes in and is fit for recycling?

Can the Recycling Center actually handle the goals that have been set by our Commission?
